The Order:

While I miss the idea, value, and deliciousness of 3-course meals for lunch from Delivery Week, I don't miss the guilty feeling I got when I couldn't finish my meal in one sitting. I'm just not a big leftovers guy, so to get back in the saddle today, AnnMarie and I ordered Italian. I am a big carbs guy. The restaurant? Dolcino Trattoria Toscana. I liked their menu of pasta standbys and selected the Rigatoni Siciliana (with fresh tomatoes, eggplant, and ricotta cheese). AnnMarie chose the Rigatoni Buttero (with peas, sweet and hot Italian sausage, and a touch of cream) and we determined to let the best rigatoni win.

The Meal:

When we opened the bag, we were greeted with a treat. In addition to our pastas, we got what may have been a variation of eggplant caponata, along with two big, soft pieces of bread. A lovely start to the meal. The eggplant made for a perfect topping to the bread and we were on our way. My rigatoni was loaded with more cheese than I expected, but it was very good. I tried to combine as many bites as I could with all the ingredients and would definitely order it again. It was a large portion, but one I was able to finish off pretty easily.

Up close and personal with a whole lot of ricottaAnnMarie enjoyed her lunch very much. The sausage was ground up, the peas hit the spot, and the cream was light and just right. Add some perfectly cooked al dente pasta and the recipe for success was complete. The generous portion even ended up being enough for two meals!

Least Favorite Thing About Calling Restaurants? I recently called a restaurant to pick up food in Williamsburg (I know, I know) and was put on hold. After 45 seconds I hung up and called again. Busy. After 5 minutes I called again. Busy. I took the subway and called for the last time 15 minutes later. Busy. (Ed: I called multiple times in each instance, making it clear to me that the person had simply put me on hold forever.)

Closest Previous Brush with Internet Fame? I was featured as Midtown Lunch'er of the Week in January 2009. Did I mention that I also contribute to Rap Exegesis? It's kind of a big deal. (Ed: As you can see, those "anything over rice" and "meat ragout" answers haven't changed all year. Maybe 2010 will be the year that I finally go carbo-neutral? Doubtful.)

Favorite Celebrity Chef? Gotta be Eric Ripert. Have you ever heard this guy talk? I'd like him more, but I'm too scared that he would steal my (non-existent) girlfriend. (Ed: I hear he's a pretty good chef also.)

Favorite Cartoon Growing Up? All the usuals (He-Man, Transformers, TMNT, Thundercats, etc...), plus did anyone else ever watch Silverhawks? That "partly metal, partly real" line is really deep.

What Superpower Do You Wish You Had? The ability to focus on a single task for more than 30 seconds at a time.

In the Past Year, What's the Latest You've Stayed Up and Why? I kicked it all night in the Bairro Alto in Lisbon because I had a 7 AM flight back to New York, via Amsterdam, where I had an 8-hour layover. My only sleep was on the plane.

Plans for Tonight? Trying to explain what it means when Jay-Z says, "Now when I bring the Nets, I'm the black Branch Rickey."

Delivery Week is coming to a close tomorrow, but like you all, I wish it could go on forever. Alas, this afternoon I placed what might be my final prix-fixe order for awhile. My choice? Ethos. One of a pair of 5-star rated Greek restaurants that everyone raves about, I figured it would be a great meal AND great research for future meals. I'm a big fan of eggplant, so I chose the Melitzanosalata (a roasted baby eggplant dip) to start, went with the classic Kotopoulo Giouvetsi (boneless chicken breast with orzo, tomato sauce, and feta cheese) as an entree, and topped it off with the Yiaourti (yogurt with honey and walnuts) for dessert. About 5 minutes after placing the order, I got a call from an unknown number. Hoping it wasn't this guy, I picked up. Turns out that Ethos had run out of orzo and needed to know if rice would be ok instead or if I wanted to change my entree. Very thoughtful of them, and I said rice would be cool.

The Meal:

The food arrived on time and it was another simply enormous feast. On top of everything I ordered, I got two cut-up pitas, three other pieces of bread, and a second dessert (Galaktosuriko for those playing along at home)! I decided to eat the chicken and rice while dipping pita in the eggplant spread. The eggplant spread was a little like baba ghanoush, but less finely ground. Very tasty. As for the chicken, I'm not normally a fan of white meat because it's often too dry and flavorless, but I was impressed with Ethos on this front as well. The tomato sauce, feta cheese, and of course chicken skin, managed to make each bite moist and action-packed. And the replacement rice? Totally yellow, in a good way.

The Whole Enchilada, er, Ethos-salata?When it came time for dessert, I was pretty stuffed and couldn't believe that I had two options! Of course I chose to combine them, dipping the pastry into the yogurt and really enjoying them both, although I'd definitely say I liked the pastry more.

Getting a little artistic with the desserts and appetizerEthos offered a wonderful Delivery Week meal and deal, and I would love to order from them again in the future. All the dishes I had are recommended, but if you want to try something different, I would expect them to have you pretty well covered. After reading some Rap Exegesis, I plan to complete the screenplay for a short film I've been working on, in which Steven Levitt and Malcolm Gladwell meet in a bar to argue theories of policing, self-promotion, and counterintuition. Levitt throws Gladwell through a plate-glass window, breaking it. Gladwell stabs Levitt with a shard of broken window. In a corner, 1975-76 New Jersey State Chess Champion and 2009 10-Page CV-possessing Econ Blogger Tyler Cowen plays chess against himself. With his dying breath, Levitt apologizes for the climate change chapter in Superfreakonomics and blames the whole thing on Stephen Dubner. A triumphant Gladwell leaves with two beautiful women. Cowen accepts his own offer of a draw and takes a thoughtful sip of a cheap tequila from Iceland that he maintains is the world's best.
